ABSTRACT

Abstract This article aims to introduce the concepts of macrocontingency and metacontingency into environmental psychology to promote collective actions in pro of the natural and urban environment. The design of cultural practices oriented to achieve the goal requires the definition of contingencies that promote social process to solve environmental problems such as: climate change, species extinction, water contamination, deforestation, migration, vandalism, etc, and to encourage responsible urban behaviors such as the use of bicycles, urban transport, recycling, among others. Although each person´s actions may contribute to the solutions, the approach of this theoretical paper is focused on the cumulative effect and the interconnected actions of people that produce an effective outcome for the well-being of many and the environment. Rule - driven behavior is showed as the learning mechanism to introduce the macrocontingencies and metacontingencies in the community. Based on pragmatism as a paradigmatic view, it is discussed the effectiveness of macrocontingencies and metacontingencies in explaining cultural processes to promote effective actions for the environment.

ABSTRACT

Abstract The present research investigated the effect of a negative reinforcement analog on the selection of culturants and, unlike previous studies, sought to eliminate the interference of the negative punishment of other culturants. Three laboratory microcultures, with three participants in each of them, were exposed to an ABAB design. The participants chose between colored lines, numbered from 1 to 10. In the Positive Reinforcement condition (A), target culturants produced cultural consequences. In the Negative Reinforcement condition (B), cultural consequences were subtracted every 30 seconds, but target culturants could delay the loss of those consequences. The analog of negative reinforcement, as well as that of positive reinforcement, selected target culturants without the interference of accidental punitive contingencies.

ABSTRACT

Abstract The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of the magnitudes of the individual and cultural consequences on the pattern of choices in situations of ethical self-control and metacontingencies. Six college students were divided into two microcultures, one with ABCAC'B'A design and another with an AC'B'ABCA design. In conditions B and B' the magnitude of the individual consequence for impulsive responses increased while the cultural consequence diminished. In conditions C and C' the magnitude of the cultural consequence increased and the individual consequence diminished. The results indicated the selection of a pattern of choices by the groups of both microcultures, according to the cultural consequence, with little or no influence of the manipulation of the magnitude of the consequences.

ABSTRACT

The arrangement of a type of metacontingency involves direct reinforcement for individual responses that compound interlocking behavioral contingencies (IBCs) since culturants are selected by cultural consequences (CC). Another type of arrangement involves situations in which CC has a dual role, selecting both responses and culturants. Therefore, there isn't IC. This paper aimed to verify if the arrangement of different types of metacontingencies would produce different patterns of responses or culturants. Two triads of undergraduate students participated in this study. In condition A, metacontingencies that involved direct reinforcement to responses and CC for culturants prevailed. In condition B, the CC selected responses as well as culturants. Triad 1 was exposed to the ABAB design while triad 2 was exposed to the BABA design. In condition A, participants emitted responses and engaged in culturants that produced consequences. In condition B, the frequency of responses decreased and culturants were maintained. We conclude that the arrangement of different types of metacontingencies produces different effects upon individual responses but not upon culturants. We did not see exposition order effects throw conditions. Furthermore, we discuss potential contributions and limitations of the procedure used in this study.

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT Behavior-analytic studies of cultural phenomena can contribute to cultural planning by using strategies such as social merchandising. The goal of this research was to analyze metacontingencies based on a social theme of great impact - human trafficking - in a Brazilian soap opera (Salve Jorge) with a large audience. Scenes related to the theme were described in terms of contingencies, classified in seven metacontingencies, which were presented in high frequency throughout the chapters. The impact of the soap opera was observed in the increased frequency of news about human trafficking in six newspapers as well as complaints registered in the periods before, simultaneous and after the exhibition of Salve Jorge. The news is indicative of the positive effect of a work of fiction on the recognition and definition of "human trafficking", which also contributes to a higher frequency of complaints and interventions implemented by competent agencies.

ABSTRACT

Behavior Analysis may be regarded as a perspective that tackles the evolutionary study of social behavior and culture. Social behavior's characterization in this field and recent researches on metacontingencies and macrocontingencies are contributions in this direction. Other evolutionary perspectives, closest to Biology, have also produced theories and evidences on this theme, but without dialogue with Behavior Analysis, which, by its turn, discusses little this other perspectives' contributions. This paper highlights possible convergences and complementarities between Behavior Analysis and studies on social learning in nonhuman animals, niche construction, and cultural evolution, aiming to enhance dialogues among researchers from different evolutionary perspectives studying social behavior and culture.

ABSTRACT

The study of cultural practices is originally a focus of social sciences, especially during seminal studies in anthropology and sociology, later influencing other areas. In Behavior Analysis, a psychological approach, Skinner stressed the importance of studies on social behavior involving institutions and large groups, as early as in 1953 on his book "Science and Human Behavior." In the 1980s, Glenn gave a significant contribution to the area proposing the concepts of metacontingency and macrocontingency. Her innovation has been followed by many studies investigating the contribution of adopting these concepts for the analysis of cultural practices. This article presents some non-experimental and experimental lines of research that focus on the maintenance and transmission of cultural practices. Metacontingency and macrocontingencies elements were analyzed in the Brazilian public health system and in family interactions. Laboratory microsocieties as a research tool that attempts to unveil the contingency relations within small groups are also described. Cultural consequences associated to the selection function of culturants have been observed in these studies. Suggestions for future research of other variables which may improve the comprehension of the selection of cultural practices are also presented.

ABSTRACT

Current mainstream accounts of cultural behavior are strongly founded on a selectionist perspective. However, more than a few theoretical discussions have emerged regarding the appropriateness of the subject matter and the identification of units of selection. I argue that although Glenn's central formulations constitute a valuable extension of operant principles, the selectionist approach has hindered the theory's conceptual and empirical development. An examination of the fundamental notions included in the theory of cultural evolution is presented. Specifically, we review the concepts of metacontingencies, interlocking behavioral contingencies, macrocontingencies, and aggregate products in terms of their contribution to a valid and significant account of cultural behavior. It is suggested that experimental functional analyses are required to identify control of behavior by local contingencies or group consequences including cumulative and aggregate products.

ABSTRACT

In the last decades, Sigrid Glenn, from the proposition of the concept of 'metacontingency', has developed a behavioral-analytic proposal that seeks to amplify the Skinnerian treatment given to cultural selection/evolution processes. This paper initially presents a description of the conceptual development of this proposal. Afterwards, considering the importance that has been assigned to verbal repertoire in the cultural selection process, proposals from anthropologists Terrence Deacon and Marvis Harris, who approach the relationship between the evolution of social/verbal environments and the selection/evolution of cultural practices, are presented. Finally, based on these propositions, forms in which the control of individual behavior by the group - and by their controlling agencies - seems to denote an increasing development in verbal/ social control mechanisms are discussed, indicating the importance to go more deeply into the study of relationships between the evolution of social/verbal environments and the selection/evolution of cultural practices.

ABSTRACT

The role of religious practices in cultural evolution and the interrelations of religious and other cultural practices are the topics of this paper. In that regard, religious and non-religious practices interact in a variety of ways and may be important or necessary for the maintenance of each. The preservation of particular practices by the deliberate manipulation of these interrelations is commonplace. Presumably, the motivation of authorities with the power to manipulate practices is centered on the value of outcomes produced. That value, explicitly or implicitly, is group survival or cultural survival. This paper provides a descriptive analysis of the socio-economic and historical conditions that generate religious practices associated with martyrdom. Our analysis draws upon interdisciplinary contact between behavior analysis and social sciences such as sociology and anthropology by utilizing concepts of metacontingency and macrocontingency. We address the significance of this interaction to the role of religious practices such as martyrdom in group survival or cultural survival and conclude with a discussion of the challenges facing behavior analysts as cultural engineers.
